ASIAN WEDDINGS Australian Asian Association Inc
Incorporated in 1956 the Australian Asian Association had very small beginnings. Operating from rented premises, the Association catered to the orientation, social, cultural & accommodation needs of Asian students coming to Western Australia under the Colombo Plan Scheme, which trained over 300,000 students from 26 nations of South East Asia & the Pacific. When Australia opened its doors to non-Anglo Saxon migrants, it resulted in the formation of small welfare & ethnic association. The Australian Asian Association then took over the role of an umbrella organisation to cater to the needs of these groups and expanded its scope to embrace not only migrants from Asia but from around the globe. The Australian Asian Association today boasts of 98 member groups from Africa, South America, Asia, the Asian Sub-Continent, South-East Asia, Europe, Eastern Europe, New Zealand, Australia & the Islands. In the early to mid sixties the Association saw a need to set up a "Centre" Through the efforts of the office bearers at that time, a small house was purchased in Ord St. which in turn was sold and 275 Stirling St. & 75 Bulwer St. acquired. 35 years down the track the visions & dreams of the founder members have come true. With a generous grant from the Lotteries Commission of W.A. a new complex, the largest ethnically diverse multicultural edifice in Western Australia, stands proudly in the corner of Stirling & Bulwer Streets - a tribute to the hard work of all the Presidents & committees who held office over the years. The Australian Asian Association of Western Australia is a highly regarded and well-respected community Service organisation, and Associations role over the next 10 years. very much focused on our Strategic Plan to establish goals and directions which the Association should seek to achieve over the next 10 years, and examine the requirements of our members and clients and the needs of both newly-arrived and long-standing migrants. These include, establishing improved services, business opportunities, increased networking and social events, communications, and improving benefits for our membership. Another initiative was to install a Refugee placement program to encourage refugees to enter the workforce and build their resource base. We will also identify options for future activities based on the requirements and needs, and the Association?s potential resources, and develop options for Australia Asia House to become a model multicultural community centre which could provide a range of service options to the Association's members. we would also like to increase our membership, and invite you to join our Association and share in the rich cultural heritage. Their approach to growing our association will be multi-faceted and practical, building partnerships with the community, government and the Corporate sector. We will adopt a more contemporary approach and represent modern day multicultural interests. Their vision is to have a centre that represents multiculturalism in its true sense with a building that represents this culture. The Association today is one of Western Australia's largest service providers to our Affiliate / Corporate and Individual membership. We offer a wide range of services working closely with Federal, State & Local government Ministers on several issues, liaising with diplomatic mission representatives, networking with corporations through the various Chambers of Commerce & Industry, seeking and submitting consensus member opinions to help formulate policy. We provide age care, both Community Aged Care packages and Home & Community Care to long standing migrants in targeted areas. Our services also include leadership & computer training, legal advocacy, support for Seniors & Youth and Emergency Relief especially for new and emerging communities. ![]()
